John Humphrys is known to have attacked politicians today
John Humphrys will stop presenting BBC Radio 4's Today program later this year, admitting that he should have left "years ago".
He said that he was about to leave in the fall, but he has not set a date yet.
Humphrys – who also hosts the game show Mastermind – presents the morning's flagship news program since 1987.
"I love to participate in the program.I have always enjoyed the program.It's the problem.I should have been going there years.Of course, I should have go there years ago, "he said.
"But I like doing the program," he told The World At One of Radio 4.
The 75-year-old also said that he would continue to introduce Mastermind.

Addressing his former co-presenter of the Today show, Sarah Montague, on The World at One, Humphrys said he would miss most the show's listeners, adding: "You feel that you have a relationship with a considerable number of people."
When asked what he would do after he left, Humphrys mysteriously announced, "I love trees, I want to be more involved with trees."
Today, editor Sarah Sands said she hoped the listeners "would appreciate John's turn this year."
Sands, who has been editing Today since 2017, said about the presenter: "He is the patriarch of the Today program, but also, even now, the little boy who throws stones.
"He is deeply suspicious of power, do not expect him to give up – he has been with us for some time."
Humphrys and Sarah Montague worked together on Today for 18 years
Humphrys joined the BBC in 1966 as a Liverpool-based journalist.
During his career at the BBC, he worked as a foreign correspondent in the United States and Africa, diplomatic correspondent and presenter of Nine O 'Clock News.
But he is best known for bringing British politicians into the Today program.
Fran Unsworth, director of information and news at the BBC, said: "John will be sorely missed by the public and his colleagues when he leaves the program this year – unless the politicians say that. he's interviewing maybe do it less. "
Humphrys has been hosting Mastermind since 2003
Humphrys is the oldest host of today, but he has also divided listeners.
He was paid between £ 400,000 and £ 409,999 for Today in 2017/18, according to accounts published last July.
