John Murray landed a book on The Earthshot Prize, recently launched by Prince William and Duchess of Cambridge last year, which aims to uncover the best solutions to fix the planet over the next decade.
Nick Davies, MD from John Murray, acquired the worldwide English language rights for Earthshot: How to save our planet by Robert Kirby at United Agents on behalf of the Royal Foundation. The book is co-authored by Colin Butfield, former executive director of the international conservation charity WWF, and award-winning producer and director Jonnie Hughes. It will feature an exclusive introduction from Prince William and will be released in the UK, Europe and across the Commonwealth on September 30, and North America on October 5, alongside a five-part BBC One television series. in autumn.
The book will be published ahead of the inaugural Earthshot Awards, which will take place in London on October 17, 2021. The five winners will each receive £ 1million to tailor their solutions to the biggest environmental challenges.
The Earthshot Award was inspired by former US President John F Kennedy’s “Moonshot”. Each year from 2021 to 2030, the Earthshot Prize will find and reward inclusive solutions for five “Earthshot” goals: protect and restore nature; purify our air; revive our oceans; build a world without waste; and fix our climate. John Murray said the companion book will highlight the urgency of the environmental challenges facing our world and provide readers with “inspiring case studies of the incredible solutions happening around the world to fix our planet.”
Hughes and Butfield said: “The Earthshot concept is simple: we have 10 years to turn the tide, 50 smart ideas and one goal: to save our planet. What we need is action and optimism. Our book stretches from the coral reefs of Mexico, to oil palm plantations in Borneo and sheep farms in Australia, to the forests of Kenya. It’s an explanation of how we got to this point, and how – by acting collectively – we can fix it. ”
Davies added: “Earthshot: How to save our planet comes at a time when the environmental crisis has finally reached mass consciousness. It’s set to be the biggest environmental title of the decade, a major trade book on climate change that will educate and inform readers around the world and help inspire decisive collective action.
