JOHOR BARU, February 24 – The Johor State Government will make mandatory the immunization of children by parents, thus avoiding any risk of infection or death.

Dr. Sahruddin Jamal, chairman of the State Committee on Health, Environment and Agriculture, said the state government supported the proposal of the Ministry of Health on this subject.

"If the federal government wants to make vaccination mandatory or impose sanctions on those who refuse to do so, I totally agree (with the proposal)," he told reporters after officiated today at the celebration of World Cancer Day at the Johor scale.

He said this in response to a statement by Health Minister Datuk Seri Dzulkefly Ahmad that the ministry would develop a proposal and a policy to make child immunization mandatory.

Dzulkefly said the Ministry of Health had received numerous calls about this, with some parents having decided not to opt for immunization, which had resulted in the death of their children.

On Thursday, February 21, a twenty-five-month-old boy, suspected of having died of diphtheria, has not been vaccinated since his birth. – Bernama
