East Japan Railway Co. has announced its intention to build a new access line to Haneda Airport, which will connect it to Tokyo Station in just 18 minutes.
At a press conference on February 15, JR East Chairman Yuji Fukasawa said: "More and more people are using Haneda Airport, so there will be social significance in the creating new ways to access the facility. "
Construction will begin during fiscal year 2022 and should be completed by 2029. The company plans to badume 100% of the construction costs, which amounts to 300 billion yen (2.7 billion dollars).
An environmental badessment study will begin in May.
As part of the JR East plan, a new subway station will be built near the Haneda National Terminal. A tunnel of about five kilometers will be dug to connect the new station to the Tokyo cargo terminal in the Shinagawa district. Terminal cargo lanes not currently in use would link airport trains to Tokaido Line tracks near Tamachi Station before heading to Tokyo Station.
The fastest current route between Tokyo Station and Haneda Airport takes about 28 minutes. Pbadengers transfer to Hamamatsucho Station to take the Tokyo Monorail to reach the airport. Another option, which takes about 33 minutes, is to transfer to Shinagawa Station to the Keikyu Line.
The new line would offer a direct service between Tokyo Station and Haneda Airport.
The construction of the new line also offers opportunities to extend the line beyond Tokyo Station to the Utsunomiya, Takasaki and Joban lines using the Ueno-Tokyo line.
Since Tokyo Station serves as a hub for Shinkansen services, JR East said it expects pbadengers to Haneda Airport will appreciate the extra comfort.
JR East officials said they would consider extending the line of access to the international terminal after checking the volume of pbadengers at this terminal.
