Jiji Press TOKYO (Jiji Press) – The East Japan Railway Co. announced Friday that it would launch in May a project to establish three new rail links connecting the central areas of Tokyo and Haneda Airport.
The railway operator will seek to open the new routes in 2029.
"The creation of various access routes to Haneda is of social importance, as the number of airport users is expected to continue to increase," said JR East President Yuji Fukasawa on the same day.
The three planned routes, which will also use some of the existing train lines, will connect respectively Haneda and the Tokyo, Shinjuku and Shin-Kiba stations, according to the company.
After the opening, the one-way trip between Tokyo Station and Haneda will be 18 minutes, compared to the current level of about 30 minutes by train. A one-way trip will take about 20 minutes for both the Shinjuku and Shin-Kiba routes, compared to more than 40 minutes now.
JR East estimates that construction costs of one stretch will be shared between the three routes and the rest of the route from Tokyo Station to about 300 billion yen.
Shinjuku and Tokyo stations are among Tokyo's busiest stations. Shin-Kiba station is common to JR East Keiyo Line, Tokyo Metro Co. Yurakucho Line and Rinkai Rapid Waterfront Line on Tokyo WaterfrontSpeech
