Warner Bros. has postponed the release date of “Judas and the Black Messiah”.
The landmark biopic, starring Daniel Kaluuya and Lakeith Stanfield, will debut on February 17, 2021. Prior to Tuesday night’s announcement, the studio had postponed the film to early 2021 but had not set an exact date. “Judas and the Black Messiah” was originally scheduled for August 2020, but has been postponed due to the pandemic.
“Judas and the Black Messiah,” as well as the rest of the Warner Bros. Slate. for the next 12 months, simultaneously lands on the company’s streaming service HBO Max and in theaters. “Wonder Woman 1984”, “Dune” and “The Matrix 4” are among 18 films following the hybrid date and date release strategy. These titles will be available on HBO Max for one month.
Warner Bros. recently made additional changes to its schedule, altering plans for “Mortal Kombat”, “Tom and Jerry” and Hugh Jackman’s sci-fi drama “Reminiscence”. “Reminiscence” has been pulled from the release schedule, while the other two films have been moved to new dates in 2021.
“Judas and the Black Messiah” was directed by Shaka King and written by King and Will Berson, based on a story by King, Berson and brothers Kenny and Keith Lucas. The film is based on the life and assassination of the leader of the Black Panther Party, Fred Hampton. Jesse Plemons, Dominique Fishback and Martin Sheen complete the cast.
Ryan Coogler, director of the Marvel superhero blockbuster “Black Panther,” produced the film. In a virtual panel in August, he said he was “blown away” when King introduced him to the project.
“President Fred Hampton is someone whose life’s work and the story of his assassination have been relevant from day one. [it] has happened and just becomes more relevant to the context, ”Coogler said. “But I also think Shaka’s point of view, and the way he wanted to tell the story, was also something extremely relevant.
