Jurgen Klopp provides update on Joel Matip’s injury as Liverpool defender in race against time

Joel Matip faces a race against time to be fit for Liverpool’s clash against Manchester United next month as the extent of his injury manifests itself.

Matip is set to be out for three weeks due to the adductor injury he suffered in Sunday’s 1-1 Premier League draw at home against ailing West Bromwich Albion.

Rhys Williams, the 19-year-old replaced Matip against the Baggies, while Nat Phillips was preferred in Wednesday’s goalless draw at Newcastle United.

And when asked about Matip’s condition after the Tyneside game, Klopp said: “The normal for this type of injury is around three weeks.”

Liverpool’s next game is at Southampton on Monday night, after which the Reds will be at Aston Villa the following Friday in the FA Cup third round.

They then entertained second-placed Manchester United on January 17, exactly three weeks after Matip was injured.

Center-back duo Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez are already sidelined with long-term knee injuries, with Fabinho being deputized as a makeshift center-back.

It is understood that Liverpool are currently unlikely to move for a new center-back during the January transfer window.
