Jussie Smollett was arrested and is facing criminal charges for allegedly filing a false police report and for disorderly conduct. Chicago police tweeted Thursday morning that the actor of "the Empire" was under arrest and under the custody of detectives.
Smollett said he was attacked by two men on 29 January. He stated that they had beaten him, tied him a rope around his neck and sprayed him with bleach. He also claimed that they had shouted racist and homophobic insults during the badault. However, the police now think that Smollett paid for two acquaintances, brothers Olabinjo Osundairo and Abimbola Osundairo, to help orchestrate the attack. The men reportedly cooperated with the investigators.
In an interview with Good Morning America on February 14, Smollett fought back against skeptics. "If I had said that it was a Muslim, a Mexican or a black, I think the doubters would have me a lot more backing," Smollett said during the television interview.
News Briefing by Superintendent Eddie Johnson and Cmdr. Edward Wodnicki will be held Thursday morning and a bail hearing is scheduled for 1:30 pm.
The legal problems of Smollett multiply. The FBI is also looking into whether the actor sent a threatening letter to the "Empire" studio in Chicago in the days leading up to the attack. Fox, the network broadcast on "Empire", initially favored Smollett, but sources say Variety that the producers of the show plan to suspend the actor.
If Smollett filed a false police report, it is a clbad 4 crime in Illinois. He could be sentenced to one to three years in prison and compensation from the Chicago Police Department for the cost of his investigation.
