Just in: South Africa raises the minimum wage to 126,480 N

… while Nigeria is fighting with 30,000 N

While Nigeria is struggling with a minimum wage of 30,000 N, its counterpart, South Africa has plans to pay its workers at 126,480 N per month.

According to South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, this would come into effect on January 1, 2019, and would benefit about six million workers currently earning 3,700 rand (N97,495).

A report published by RAPPORTEUR SAHARA says that a South African rand exchanges for N26.35. According to the media, this means that South African workers would earn 527 Naira per hour, or 4,216 Naira per day and 126,480 Naira per month. Their Nigerian counterparts currently earn 75 Naira per hour, 600 Rands a day (eight hours a day) and 18,000 Rands a month.

With a minimum wage of 30,000 N, Nigerian workers earned 125 N per hour or 1,000 N per day, or 30,000 N per month.

In comparison, a Nigerian worker would earn less than a quarter of what the South African earns each month.
