PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla .– After five holes on Saturday at the Players Championship, it was impossible to ignore the deja vu moment.
Justin Thomas birdied the first, second, third and fourth holes to start his round and was watching his fifth straight birdie from the middle of the fifth fairway. It was identical to how he started his third round at the flagship PGA Tour event in 2015.
“I think you pass 4, and 5 is clearly a lot harder than # 4 or a few of those holes, and you hit a nice road over there and I was just looking at him down the chimney with a 8 iron, ”he said.

And just like in 15, Thomas “doubled” his approach shot to the fifth green and bogeyed.
“It could have been the best thing that ever happened to me, to wake up and get out of it, because I wanted to keep making birdies,” he said.
Thomas did better than he did in 15 with a third lap 64 and was tied for second when he finished his lap. His round was a welcome reprieve after a few difficult weeks for the world No.3.
In January, during the Sentry Tournament of Champions, microphones on the course picked up Thomas uttering a homophobic slur and the fallout prompted his longtime clothing sponsor to drop him.
A month later, before the final round of the Phoenix Open, Thomas’s grandfather, Paul, a longtime PGA pro, died at 89.
“I’ve really had my fair share of lows this season and just had a lot of things mentally that I never had to deal with and maybe take things for granted or just don’t enjoy the game,” he said. “But it’s just when you’re able to get into those areas and hit those shots exactly the way you see it, it’s fun. One of those funny moments happened on the 16th par-5, where Thomas almost broke his second 204-yard shot.
This capped a round with an eagle, seven birds and a bogey, which was a shot off the tournament record.
