Kacey musgraves revealed some intimate details about the psychedelic guided journey that inspired his new album on the podcast A slight change of plans, moderated by Dr Maya Shankar. Their conversation also includes two snippets of new songs from the Grammy-winning Musgraves sequel. Golden hour.
Musgraves’ guided trip to LSD is an integral part of the narrative for the upcoming project, which has not been officially announced. Musical accompaniment – from Bach to shamanic chants to the Beatles – was part of the experience and was organized in such a way that those feelings and memories could be accessed again later, according to the podcast.
“These are songs from all over the world,” says Musgraves. “You listen to this playlist, it walks you through these emotions and feelings on purpose. Some are quite intense. As you come out of your experience, you resonate with these feelings of gratitude and warmth. The music that I heard, I have never heard music like that in my life. You feel it in your bones, your cells. It goes through you in a way I’ve never experienced before.

The two are intimately linked, as Musgraves reveals that much of the record was inspired by the difficulty of the procedure. Speaking with honesty and vulnerability, Musgraves explained to She that the 15-track album was inspired by a struggle in which “I felt like I was dying on the inside.” I was collapsing. I was sad. I was feeling alone. I felt broken.
Musgraves, despite the thematic heaviness, will once again show his ability to blend humor, wit, and intelligent lyrics with relatability tied to catchy hooks and strong melodies. She also said She that when recording the new album, artists who influenced the project include Bill Withers, Daft punk, Sade, The Eagles and Weezer. The record is finished and should be released in late summer or early fall.
