After hitting theaters earlier this month, Kangana star Ranaut Thalaivii is now streaming on Netflix. The biopic J Jayalalithaa, directed by AL Vijay and written by KV Vijeyandra Prasad, also starred Arvind Swami.
Earlier, Kangana had taken his stories to Instagram and hailed it as one of the “best movies of his career” so far.

While Thalaivii has opened its doors to warm criticism from film critics, it has suffered losses as cinemas in Mumbai and Kerala are still closed and cinephile attendance is still low in other parts of the country. . Multiplex channels PVR Cinemas and INOX Leisure Ltd refused to show the Hindi version of the film, saying the window of its Netflix premiere was too narrow.
The film was due for release in April, but has been postponed due to the second wave of Covid-19 that hit India. Now that the film is streaming on Netflix, many will finally be able to catch Thalaivii for the first time.
In her review, Indian Express film critic Shubhra Gupta wrote: “Kangana lives in this very complex character like the skin in Thalaivii, from the moment Jaya is an aspiring actress, dragging the mighty MGR (Arvind Swamy), to her meteoric rise in the film industry and her transition, reluctant at first, then becoming more stable and safer, into an ambitious and uncompromising politician.
“Without questioning whether the events as shown in the film were faithful to real-life events, the film manages to give us some insight into Tamil Nadu politics of the time (MGR was Chief Minister from 1977 to 1987; his insane popularity as a film idol supporting his rise in politics, a very Tamil and Telugu phenomenon.) MGR has never hidden the fact that Jayalalitha was his protege, and their closeness has always been a sore point among his revelers: in the film he is played by MGR RMV loyalist (Raj Arjun) who almost comically becomes a note in the way he continues to look at the woman who kidnaps the head of her beloved attention from where it should be, ”added Gupta.
