The New York Yankees and Kansas City Royals will resume a four-game series at their next meeting at Yankee Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Kansas City started Thursday but is only 7-13 after losing the second game. New York could return to .500 with another win on Saturday.
Drive in the car
Alex Gordon scored a brace on Friday to extend his streak of six-game strikes for the Royals, who have had a series of consecutive wins. Kansas City fell to 2-3 midway through its 10-game road trip and is tied with Boston for the AHL's worst record.
Right-hander Heath Fillmyer (0-0, 9 am) will head to Kansas City on Saturday. Fillmyer lasted only 3.0 innings during his debut season, but he escaped without a decision despite five points on six hits, but he was better on his last outing at the White Sox with 5.0 rounds of three balls. The 24-year-old faced New York at Yankee Stadium last July in his seventh major league appearance. He did not consider the decision after making three runs on five hits in 5.0 innings. Fillmyer had a 6.00 ERA on the road last year, more than twice what he had at home (2.91).
Tanaka time
With a nine-game road trip on the opposite coast looming on the horizon, the Yankees are trying to create momentum with a solid finish at their current stand. Winner of three of his last four games, New York may advance to .500 overall and Yankee Stadium after a four-game series against the Royals. Brett Gardner, who won Wednesday's win against Boston, scored a two-run homer and Mike Tauchman also scored for the second time in three games as New York got a 6-2 win on Friday. Luke Voit has distinguished and has walked twice to become the fourth Yankee in 10 seasons with a winning streak on at least 30 games.
Masahiro Tanaka (1-1, 3.22) will oppose Fillmyer on Saturday. After conceding a deserved point in each of his first three starts of the season, Tanaka was overturned on his last start by the White Sox and conceded the loss after allowing five runs in seven hits in 4.0 innings. He achieved his best performance in his previous round in Houston with six innings of one point to earn his second consecutive non-decision victory. Kansas City's Lucas Duda is 3 points out of 9, a pair of home runs and a brace against Tanaka, who has a 6.00 medal in two games against Kansas City.
