Newcastle goalkeeper Karl Darlow told Sky Sports News he is slowly improving at home after being hospitalized last week with Covid-19.
Darlow admitted his experience with the virus had been “quite horrible” after testing positive 10 days ago and was sent home by club officials to spend time in isolation.
It wasn’t the end of the story for the 30-year-old, whose condition worsened and eventually led to him being sent to hospital after becoming increasingly dehydrated.
Darlow confirmed that he is now out of the hospital and has returned home to begin the recovery process.
He said Sky Sports News: “I had to go to the hospital last week, which was pretty awful – but I’m slowly improving now, although I still feel a bit rough. It shows that the virus is still there and that we must always be careful. “
Newcastle boss Steve Bruce confirmed after last Friday’s friendly victory that Darlow was grappling with Covid.
Bruce also had to do without the other first team goalkeepers, Mark Gillespie and Freddie Woodman, as they had been seen as close contacts of Darlow.
The two have since tested negative for the virus and are expected to join Newcastle’s squad in training this week.
It will be a relief for Bruce who, apart from being without Darlow, also lacks top service Martin Dubravka, who will miss the start of the season after undergoing surgery on a foot injury.
Bruce also had to do without defender Jamaal Lascelles and winger Allan Saint-Maximin for big chunks of last season as they battled the aftermath of Covid-19.
