The Duchess of Cambridge was back in engagements after a summer break today, resuming her duties with a notable and moving visit. Wing Commander Bailey recalled the struggle of “the emotions and challenges of crews landing on an airfield that was overrun with people” and shared the toll the operation took to those involved. He described how the Duchess was interested in the “people talk”, adding that she wanted to know “the experience in the back of the plane, trying to imagine what 460 people looked like there, in what state they were in. How did they feel, talk about children, what seemed to connect to her. Being able to tap into the right thing is an art.
Wing Commander Kevin Latchman, who flew three planes from Kabul, also met with the Duchess. “It was fantastic to be honest. The operation itself is a shining example of what we can offer when we all come together. You could see the adults sort of stopping before the ramp, turning around and realizing that they were leaving their home countries for the last time with just one bag. It was really moving to see him.
Of his meeting with Kate, he added: “Meeting the Duchess and having her be so interested and engaged in our stories was awesome. We serve our queen, our country, the royal family. And obviously having that level, the boss coming in and patting you on the back for the hard work was amazing. “
Operation PITTING involved all units based at RAF Brize Norton, and planes flew around the clock to support the evacuation.
