Komfo Anokye University Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi recorded a reduction in maternal deaths from 111 in 2019 to 53 in 2020.
This translates into a drop in the maternal mortality rate from 1,575 per 100,000 live births in 2019 to 847 per 100,000 live births in 2020, the lowest in the past five years.
Dr Oheneba Owusu Danso, Managing Director of KATH, made this known at the Kumasi Hospital end-of-year performance review meeting.
He said that in addition to improving clinical care, the establishment of the Nana Afia Serwaa Kobi Ampem (NAKSA) Baby and Mother Care Center (NAKSA), which was built and commissioned by Ms. Rebecca Akufo-Addo, the first lady of the Rebecca Foundation, made this achievement possible. .
In addition, the increased capacity of the National Ambulance Service (NAS) ensured faster and improved quality of the condition of referred patients received in hospital.
Dr Owusu Danso said the total deliveries to the facility fell from 6,814 in 2019 to 6,247 in 2020, indicating a decrease of 8.32%.
He said the COVID-19 pandemic was having a devastating effect on the hospital’s operations.
The execution of the hospital budget recorded revenues of GH 73.71 million compared to the projected amount of GH 80.16 million.
The expenditure amounted to GH 80.21 million against a budget target of GH 80.16 million.
This resulted in overall spending of over GHG 6.49 million in 2020 compared to targeted revenue.
The attendance of specialized outpatients also fell by 31.82% with 190,657 cases against 279,545 for the period 2019.
Dr Owusu Danso said a total of 7,646 health workers received the first dose of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine.
He praised the government for getting the country’s first batch of 600,000 doses of vaccine, advising everyone to take the vaccine as the pandemic was still spreading.
He also thanked the government for providing personal protective equipment (PPE) to the hospital, which helped reduce the burden of hospital spending.
Dr Owusu Danso said that with the support of its partners, the hospital intends to initiate and continue some projects to further improve the hospital’s capacity to provide quality specialist care to the public.
