A Kentucky child, Jackson Oblisk, has fallen into a coma after being bitten by a tick and contracting the potentially deadly Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever disease.
It was a terrifying experience for the family, but thankfully, the two-year-old boy woke up just in time to celebrate his second birthday.
Toddler catches deadly disease
In an interview with WHAS, Jackson's mother, Kayla, said that her child and father had visited Mount Washington Municipal Park, where he had been bitten by a tick on his neck. The family did not think it would lead to anything serious, as it would just take the measure and continue its journey.
However, Kayla began to worry when Jackson started having a fever and pale pink spots appeared on her body. At that time, she took him to the doctor where he was diagnosed with a viral rash. There is nothing that can be done, so we told the family to just wait.
When Jackson's rashes became painful, the family took him to emergency rooms urgently. Spotted Rocky Mountain fever was mentioned, but initially, the family felt that it was too rare for him to catch it. It turns out that Jackson was actually suffering from the disease.
"My child did not get up, he did not eat, he did not drink, he had a fever of 105 degrees," recalls Kayla. "We could not do anything, if you touched him, he would scream."
The doctors told them that the disease often became fatal on the eighth day. Jackson was finally treated on the seventh day.
The toddler went into a coma and woke up just in time for his birthday. We are now waiting for him to recover fully.
"I'm so happy that as a parent, I thought you knew something was wrong and I followed it," Kayla said.
Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever
It is not easy to diagnose Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, as many of the early signs and symptoms of this disease are not specific to it. However, it is important to know the signs because Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever is a serious disease that can be life threatening.
According to the CDC, fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, muscle aches and lack of appetite are some of the symptoms. The rashes are typical of the disease and usually appear two to four days after the onset of fever.
Spotted fever cases of the Rocky Mountains have been reported throughout the United States, but more than 60% of cases occur in Arkansas, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, and Tennessee.
