Kenyan police on Thursday detained a man described as a “bloodthirsty vampire” charged with the gruesome murders of at least 10 children.
Masten Milimo Wanjala, 20, was arrested on Wednesday for the murder of two children whose bodies were found dumped in a wooded area in the capital Nairobi.
But in a chilling confession, he admitted to the cold-blooded murder of at least 10 young teenagers, police said.
They described his arrest as a major breakthrough in an investigation into a wave of worrying disappearances of children in Kenya – nearly two a day in recent weeks, police said.
“Wanjala single-handedly slaughtered his victims in the most cruel way, sometimes by sucking blood from their veins before executing them,” the Criminal Investigations Directorate (DCI) said on Twitter on Wednesday evening, calling him a “vampire bloodthirsty”.
The killings, targeting 12 and 13 year olds, date back five years. His victims were drugged and blooded and some of them were strangled, police said.
Wanjala’s arrest made headlines in Kenya’s mainstream newspapers on Thursday, with photos of the suspect wearing a bloody football shirt published.
Wanjala’s first victim, police said, was a 12-year-old girl he kidnapped five years ago in Machakos County, east of Nairobi.
The murder of his next victim in western Kenya sparked protests, as residents set fire to the house of the person they suspected had killed the boy.
“In a mind-boggling account, the murderer recounted heartbreaking details of how he lured victims to his killer jaws before grabbing (the) dear life of innocent children,” DCI said on Twitter.
“Unbeknownst to some worried families, their children have long been executed by the beast and their remains thrown into thickets. Others were submerged in the city’s sewer lines and left to rot, ”he added.
Police said he demanded 30,000 Kenyan shillings ($ 277/234 euros) from the parents of a teenager before killing him.
The bodies of several children who fear they may have died at the hands of Wanjala have not yet been found.
Wanjala did not apologize for his actions and told detectives that he took “great pleasure” in killing his victims.
