The highest Kenyan officials, led by Foreign Minister Monica Juma, have returned 35.4 kg of smuggled gold from Tanzania.

The value of gold – which the team has handed over to President John Magufuli – has not been declared, but a Kenyan news site reports that it is worth at least 1 million dollars (£ 800,000).

The shipment left Mwanza airport and was heading for the UAE before being seized at Nairobi's main airport, according to the newspaper The Citizen.

The Kenyan delegation also returned 152,000 stolen dollars to a Tanzanian bank, the newspaper reports.

Mr Magufuli said that he had discussed the return of minerals and money with his Kenyan counterpart, Uhuru Kenyatta.

"I want to remind Tanzanians that you can not commit a crime in Kenya and come to hide in Tanzania and vice versa … you will be arrested," said Magufuli.

He also said that investigations would be opened to determine whether state agents were involved in the traffic.
