Using hand tools, Muchami opened a path leading to a road through the thick bush of his village, Kaganda, 80 kilometers from Nairobi, the capital of Kenya.
Because of the bad roads, people in rural Kenya – like Muraga County where Kaganda is – are forced to use longer routes to get to shops and other amenities.
The road in the village of Muchami was to be completed five years ago by local leaders, but work was still to begin. So he decided to take things in hand.
The story of Muchami was highlighted on Facebook by Ndagitari Kinyungu Micheke Jnr, who posted pictures of the work in progress and congratulated Muchami for his relentlessness. The publication on Facebook indicates that Muchami had already traveled about 1.5 kilometers.
"I approached the county badembly and they did not respond by making the road, I felt frustrated and went ahead to do it myself," Muchami told CNN.
He has half a kilometer to go before finishing the road and was hailed as a hero by his neighbors for his efforts to facilitate the movement of villagers.
"The locals are happy with me and me too," said Muchami. Even though the road is not over yet, locals have started using the clear section, he said.
Muchami said that he had promised local authorities to gravel the road.
