June 14 (Reuters) – Australian captain Sam Kerr said his 3-2 win over Brazil at the Women's World Cup Thursday was the perfect answer to critics who had written off after his initial defeat against the US. ;Italy.
The victory in Montpellier allowed Australia to become the second Women's World Cup team to win a match after at least two goals behind, after Sweden defeated Germany 3-2 in 1995.
The joy of the Matildas contrasted with the sadness that prevailed after their 2-1 defeat against Italy in Valenciennes on Sunday, a defeat that caused a wave of criticism at home.
Kerr said the kickbacks only excite them.
"There were a lot of critics talking about us but we're back so bad for that one," said Kerr after his victory over Brazil. "We do not listen to the enemies.
"Social media provides people with a platform to say what they want, so it was good to send a message home and send a message to the rest of the world.
"A match was not going to derail our hopes in World Cup – and that's why it was so frustrating for us because instead of the media saying" we can change that. "
Australia joined Brazil and Italy at three points in Group C. The Italians will face Jamaica in Reims on Friday.
Kerr said Australia was thrilled to beat a quality team like Brazil, but that she would now focus on her last group match against Jamaica next Tuesday in Grenoble.
"Brazil is one of the best teams in the world, it probably has the best player in the history of the game (in Marta)," she said.
"So, if people do not look at the Australians, we will pick you up as we did then.
