Minister of Information Addresses Members of the Diplomatic Community
The government ensures the representatives of foreign missions in the country of their security, despite recent kidnappings and abductions reported in some parts of the country.
A government delegation led by the Minister of National Security, Albert Kan-Dapaah, met Wednesday with the diplomatic community on security measures.
The meeting followed the successful operation of the state's security apparatus aimed at rescuing two Canadian women, Lauren Patricia Catherine Tilley, 19, and Bailey Jordan Chitty, 20, from their captors at Kumasi earlier in the day.
They were abducted on June 4, after being taken into a vehicle as they were getting off the Uber taxi at Kumasi Royal Golf Club at 8:25 pm.
Two weeks earlier, two students from the University of New Brunswick had traveled to the country to volunteer with a non-governmental organization.
Later in the day, the Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, invited the media to provide additional details on the course of the operation.
At least 10 suspects were arrested, including three Nigerians. Another Nigerian is on the run, said the Minister of Information.
Oppong Nkrumah said the two women were supported by professionals and were physically unharmed.
The entire operation, he said, was executed by a team of professional security agents from the National Investigation Bureau and the Anti-Terrorist Brigade.
Prior to this meeting, the delegation led by the Minister of Security had also taken the opportunity to ensure the diplomatic community the general readiness of security agencies to deal with all kinds of crimes.
