Kidney failure on the rise, warn experts

About 11.8% of local residents suffer from chronic kidney failure, while less than 10% of the population experiences renal health, medical experts said Thursday during World Kidney Day.

Kidney disease is a global public health problem characterized by high incidence, high mortality and insufficient awareness. It is also a silent killer because there are no symptoms at the beginning of the disease.

There are 850 million people with kidney disease around the world and 2.4 million people a year.

"With the increasing number of elderly people and the number of people with high risk factors such as hypertension and diabetes, the incidence of chronic renal failure will continue to increase in China in the next 10 years, "said Dr. Ni Zhaohui of Renji Hospital. "There are 1 to 2 million people with end-stage kidney disease in the country and nearly 400,000 people need dialysis, with an annual increase of 15 to 20%."

High awareness, regular screening and early detection are important for the prevention and control of kidney disease.

"Ingesting certain nutrients such as fat and salt, lack of exercise, high blood pressure, smoking, alcohol consumption, lack of sleep and pollution are all of risks to kidney health, "said Ni. "Drug abuse, inappropriate drug use and inappropriate methods of weight loss are all causes of kidney disease."
