An Israeli minister has boasted that his country was the only one to "kill Iranians" in remarks that fit into the context of growing tensions between the Western powers and Iran in the Gulf.
"Israel is the only country in the world to kill Iranians for two years," Israeli Minister of Regional Cooperation Tzachi Hanegbi said in an interview with Israel's Kan Bet radio on Sunday.
"We are hitting Iranians hundreds of times in Syria, sometimes we recognize it and sometimes foreign reports reveal it," he said.
The minister was referring to hundreds of Israeli attacks in neighboring Syria against what is, he said, Iranian military targets and Hezbollah.
Hanegbi accused Iran, Israel's main enemy, of seeking to create "chaos" and "undermine the freedom of navigation".
In response, the Iranian TV news Press TV tweeted"This is how the Israelis speak freely and proudly about the badbadination of Iranians! Just imagine what would happen if it were the opposite!"

When asked if he feared that Israel would not receive support from the United States in the event of a conflict with Iran, Hanegbi suggested that Tehran would avoid such a scenario.
The minister added that the Iranians "are very moderate in their responses and that it is not because they do not have capabilities, but because they understand that". Israel is synonymous with business ".
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke in the same vein last week during an interaction with the National Security College cadets.
"For now, the only army in the world to fight Iran is the Israeli army," he said.
Earlier this month, Netanyahu had warned that Israeli fighter jets "could reach any place in the Middle East, including Iran".
In June, the Israeli prime minister said: "Israel has acted hundreds of times to prevent Iran from settling militarily in Syria, while actively and openly calling for [Israel’s] destruction."
Note amid the Gulf tensions
The Israeli minister made the remarks during the seizure of a British-flagged oil tanker by Iran Friday in the Strait of Hormuz, which resulted in escalating tensions between London and Tehran.
The conflict between the United Kingdom and Iran has added to the current tensions in the Gulf triggered by the decision of US President Donald Trump to withdraw from the historic agreement signed in 2015 with the US nuclear.
Earlier this month, Britain seized an Iranian oil tanker in Gibraltar on the basis of allegations that Iran would smuggle oil into Syria, in violation of United Nations sanctions. .
Last month, Iran shot down an American drone flying over its territory, which almost led to a US military attack on Iran, which Trump called at the last minute.
On Friday, the Pentagon confirmed the deployment of about 500 US troops in Saudi Arabia as "an additional deterrent" to "emerging and credible threats" in the region.
