In Donny Cates and Iban Coello’s Venom # 33, a fan-favorite Spider-Man hero rises from the grave to help fight the symbiote god Knull.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Venom # 33 by Donny Cates, Iban Coello, Jesus Aburtov and Clayton Cowles of VC, on sale now.
At the start of the King in black event, Eddie Brock died, leaving the heroes of the world hopeless in the fight against Knull. But Eddie isn’t gone – well, not everyone, at least. In Venom # 32, we learned that Eddie’s Codex, a piece of symbiote that contains his entire identity, is now part of the Hive Spirit. Basically, through this symbiote, a part of Eddie was kept alive in a place that could essentially be described as some kind of pocket dimension, a purgatory for the Knull symbiotes.

Inside the hive, Eddie found two old friends, also kept alive by their codices: Rex Strickland aka Tyrannosaurus and Flash Thompson, fan favorite Venom / Anti-Venom Agent. Now in Venom # 33, all three of them fight Knull from within and, miraculously, The Flash is able to escape, once again storming the real world to join the rest of the heroes. This means Flash Thompson is, in one form or another, officially back in the main Marvel Universe.
Flash Thompson started in the Marvel Universe as a bully of Peter Parker. However, after joining the Army and sustaining a terrible injury, Flash joined Operation Rebirth 2.0 and was linked to the Venom symbiote, becoming a new super-soldier known as Agent Venom. Once Eddie Brock recovers his symbiote, Flash would then become something else thanks to Alchemax’s Anti-Venom Serum: Anti-Venom Agent.
Flash continued to function as a superhero, but tragically passed away in 2018 Amazing Spider-Man # 800 of Dan Slott, Giuseppe Camuncoli, Jim Cheung, Stuart Immonen and Humberto Ramos, helping Spider-Man take on the Red Goblin. For three years the character has been dead, but he finally returned Venom # 32. However, it is important to note that this is not the full Flash Thompson – it is a symbiote codex that contains his memory and identity. While it might not be the real deal, it is still, in essence, the best thing to do.
All the while, Flash’s codex was trapped in the mind of the hive but now in Venom # 33, he is able to hijack one of Knull’s symbiotes, allowing him to return to the real world. Flash takes the form of an anti-symbiote dragon, and he will surely prove to be a powerful ally as the heroes attempt to defeat Knull and free Earth from his grip.
This means that the codex that contains Flash’s identity now flies freely throughout the Marvel Universe. He might just be a symbiote, but he’s back in the world and best of all, he could stay there once. King in black coming to an end. Likewise, in the 2018 Venom “Rex” scenario, Eddie Brock met Rex, a veteran who recruited him on a mission to help free his fellow Sym-Soldiers. However, while Rex looked human, he had been killed a long time ago. But thanks to his codex, his symbiote kept him alive, taking on his appearance.
Something similar could happen to Flash Thompson. Flash may be technically dead, but part of him lives in his codex. Now that he’s bonded with a symbiote, it could take on his appearance and he could join the larger Marvel Universe. It might have been easy to miss everything that just happened, but it looks like King in black just gave Flash Thompson a realistic path back from the dead.
