When the Los Angeles Lakers agreed to separate from head coach Luke Walton, he interviewed and became the head coach of the Sacramento Kings.
While Walton wanted to stay with the Lakers despite the circumstances, it was later reported that they had actually fired him.
While the Lakers will meet three potential candidates to replace Walton, the 39-year-old was introduced as the Kings head coach.
With the Kings giving Walton an opportunity similar to that of becoming head coach, he thanked the young Lakers core, via kings:
"There is an excellent core of young people there. I thank them and appreciate the time spent training them, developing them and watching them progress. "
When Walton was hired before the 2016-17 season, he was considered a young head coach at the helm of the team's young core. However, when basketball president Magic Johnson and general manager Rob Pelinka took over, they traded some of the young core to create maximum space for two slot machines.
Once LeBron James signed as a free agent, expectations have evolved from the development of the young core to the competition for the championships. And at a meeting early in the season with Johnson, it became clear that Walton was not part of the future of the team.
Despite all the injuries and rumors of exchange of Anthony Davis, Walton is ultimately held responsible for their lack of playoffs for the sixth consecutive season. As there is uncertainty in Los Angeles, Walton has an opportunity to grow with another young core in Sacramento.
