If you love the BMW R 18, but deep down you want it to look a lot more streamlined and art deco-like, we’ve got good news for you. Kingston Custom is a custom boutique run by Dirk Oehlerking, who collaborated with BMW Motorrad to make the world an art deco dream come true.
It’s called the Spirit of Passion and features one of Kingston’s unmatched handcrafted fairings. While Oehlerking said he left much of the R 18 underneath intact, he also took care to preserve and continue the paint and lines found in the base bike. Instead of wiping up the slate and building an entirely new structure, Oehlerking chose to develop design ideas that BMW had already started with its original plans.
“The BMW R 18 is so perfect that I left the technology as it is. The frame is 100% original and so sophisticated that nothing should be changed here, ”Oehlerking said in a statement. Other elements he incorporated into this custom extension of the R 18 include a seat from the accessories catalog, Kellermann turn signals and an LED headlight which is now integrated into this dipping front fairing. Oehlerking also created a completely original front wheel and tank for this project.
Generally, most road bikes are not streamlined to the same degree as the spirit of passion. Here again, isn’t the interest of a good custom other than typical? This design is sure to be a talking point in any shows he attends in the future, once shows are a thing again.

Dirk Oehlerking and Kingston Customs have a long history of custom BMW designs in their past, with 17 custom motorcycles collaboratively created so far. In 2018, the Kingston Custom White Phantom landed at a special custom motorcycle exhibit at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles, California. Oehlerking has worked hard on customizing bikes for over 35 years and says he always starts a new design with pencil sketches and a handy bottle of correction fluid handy.
