Kingston residents discover dengue fever

Health Services Kingston and St Andrew have held dengue awareness sessions as part of the ongoing response to the dengue outbreak.

The health services reported that 106 community health aides and 14 temporary vector workers had organized dengue awareness sessions on 28 and 29 January in the following areas:

• Stony Hill Shopping Center and surrounding area;

• Golden Spring Shopping Center and surrounding area;

• Royal Port;

• Riverton Meadows;

• Callaloo Mews;

• Olympic gardens;

• the city of Greenwich;

• gardens with sea views; and the

• New Kingston business district.

Dozens of residents of these communities, including members of churches, schools and businesses have been informed of the signs, symptoms and treatment of dengue fever. In addition, public health officials distributed leaflets and brochures on the prevention of dengue fever and the elimination of mosquito breeding sites. Residents were encouraged to play an active role in preventing, reducing and destroying mosquito breeding sites, which is essential to limit the spread of the virus.

Health officials in Kingston and St Andrew said they would continue to work in these communities. People can contact the health centers or the health department in their area to find out the nebulization schedule to find out when the team will visit their area.
