Police in the Bono-Est region determined the number of pbadengers in the two buses that collided on the Kintampo-Techiman road at 108 hours on Friday.

According to the Kintampo Divisional Police Commander, ACP Prime Minister Joseph Antwi Gyawu, the death of 55 people has been confirmed. He also told Anas Sabbit, Joy News correspondent for the East region, that 35 of the dead could not be identified.

He said that 53 of them survived but with varying degrees of injury. He added that survivors are being treated in various health facilities.

The officer gave the following breakdown of the wounded and the place where they were sent; 40 were sent to Jema hospital; Twelve people also receive medical care at the Holy Family Hospital in Techiman, while another person is treated at the Wenchi government hospital.

He added that the fatal crash occurred around 2 am Friday, in a town called Ampoma, in the Bono East area.

The preliminary investigations reveal the two buses, one bearing registration number GT 5694 18 and the other GT 3916 17.

Both had a total of 108 pbadengers on board.

The reactions

Felicia Adjei, Joy News MP, Joseph Opoku Gakpo, expressed her grief over the tragedy. She added that one of the drivers might be asleep; leading to the accident.

Transport spokesperson Kwame Agbodza, however, hesitated to reject the blame, saying it could also be a mechanical fault.

He added that Parliament would convene the Minister of Transport to answer questions on the progress of the Presidential Task Force on Road Accident Reduction.

Kwame Atuahene, representative of the Road Safety Commission, said that the Commission will badess what has happened and will issue an authoritative response to the media.
