Jurgen Klopp welcomed the return of Virgil van Dijk and Xherdan Shaqiri before Liverpool's trip to Manchester United on Sunday.

Star defender Van Dijk missed Tuesday night's game 0-0 draw in the Champions League with Bayern Munich because of the suspension, but will stay in the side at Old Trafford.

The Dutchman will probably be his partner, Joel Matip, at the heart of the defense, Fabinho returning in the middle of the field or heading directly to the bench.

Gini Wijnaldum, Naby Keita and Jordan Henderson all played admirably in the midfield against Bayern, although it seems to be a direct confrontation between England and Fabinho for the post of holding.

Shaqiri is also returning from an injury to the abdomen, giving the The Reds boss another option to attack to consider.

Speaking at Melwood Friday, Klopp said he was delighted with the improvement in his team's fitness, although Dejan Lovren and Joe Gomez are still missing and that Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Rhian Brewster are not yet ready to come back.

After returning from Van Dijk, Klopp confessed: "It's really nice to see him again.

"By the way, this is the first time since I do not know how many weeks to make a choice.

"Between the midfielders, the defenders, even the half-centers, if I think about Fabinho in this position, I could make a decision on that.

"So it's good. This is a good time for us, so far this week because of Bayern, it was more or less a recovery.

"But now we have two sessions to prepare for the match and that's good."

As for players returning from injury and illness before the United clash, Klopp added: "Dejan does not participate, Joe does not participate, I think all the others are at least in training.

"Rhian Brewster is still only [doing] small parts, Ox in larger parts, but not ready to play.

"The rest trained and will train with us.

"Generally, I get the message that someone is sick, so I'm always a little worried about it! But so far, I have not heard anything.

Klopp, meanwhile, gave his opinion on United under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer before the match at Old Trafford. Read the full story here …
