Comfort Benewaa Osei Owusu, a 100-level chemical engineering student, and his two friends from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) have developed a gas leak detector that operates via SMS alert.

The technology seeks to detect any gas leak and to avoid any possible destruction.

Comfort is supported by Safianu Inunnarm and Barikisu Nasiru, both students in geological engineering.

She said that the innovation and the idea occurred after the loss of a friend in a gas explosion.

"There are a lot of fires in Ghana resulting from a gas explosion. Recently, one of our friends died as a result of this and we thought that there should be a great solution,"Benewaa Comfort Osei Owusu expressed his opinion.

The girls said that their technology or gadget is equipped with a sensor that detects the gas concentration and triggers a ring to alert neighbors.

They also noted that it has a GPS and a GSM with the ability to contain at least three phone numbers.

These automatically send messages in the event of a gas leak.

Since 2014, Ghana has recorded at least nine major incidents of gas explosion in the country.

Six of them occurred in the Greater Accra region and one in Takoradi in the west, in Kasoa in Central and Kumasi Ashanti regions.

At the same time, it was also reported that 35% of the more than 300 cases of burns reported at Korle Bu University Hospital in 2017 were due to gas explosions.
