KNUST students protest high fees for private hostels

Some aggrieved students at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) are protesting what they describe as exorbitant amounts charged by private hostel owners.

They call on the government and the university management to remedy the situation.

Prices at hostels have ranged from GHS 2,000 to over GHS 5,000 for various accommodation packages per academic year.

The students lamented that the high prices made life unbearable for them.

A team of police were deployed to the school to prevent students from demonstrating on Friday morning.

“There is no improvement or renovation [on the hostel facilities] and when you go to the gate the roads are very bad. They take huge sums of money and do nothing for the road and do nothing at the hostel, ”a student told Citi News.

Another complained that “there is a pandemic, but our hostel manager is charging us anyway. How can we deal with this.

Some of them took to social media to complain about the issue using the hashtag #FixKnustHostelPrices.

The issue of accommodation costs has been a matter of concern for the Ghanaian National Student Union (NUGS) which has called on the Ministry of Public Works and Housing to find a solution.
