KNUST was closed for an indefinite period following violent student demonstrations on Monday 22 October 2018 against what they called the brutality inflicted on them by the KNUST security services.
The students, under the pretext of walking peacefully and presenting their grievances to the university authorities, instead ransacked the security office, attacked the main security office and damaged several cars. Furniture and several motorcycles were also burned.
The students in number were then matched to the main administrative block of the university, where more than 20 private cars belonging to the university staff were seriously damaged, the reception of the main administrative block having been totally vandalized.
As a result, the institution was closed and the management reconstituted to deal with grievances.
Last week, the Academic Council chaired by the Vice Chancellor announced a new academic calendar for the University following the disruption.
According to the new provisions, the courses have resumed and will take place at the same time as the mid-term exams. Students will go on Christmas leave on December 19th and will return on January 4th, 2018 for the end of semester exam.
"The conferences culminate in an outstanding mid-term exam that will run concurrently on December 19, 2018, students will leave for their return home on January 4, 2019 and will take the semester exam on Monday, January 7 and will also end on January 17th.
