Kofi Kingston c. Dolph Ziggler bypasses them

The latest issue of the WWE SmackDown on June 4 saw Kofi Kingston and Dolph Ziggler's last meeting before their WWE Championship match at the Super ShowDown on Friday.

Last night's WWE SmackDown was the last word war between WWE Champion Kofi Kingston and No. 1 contender Dolph Ziggler just days before Kofi defended his title against Dolph at the Super ShowDown, a night that has been getting ready since a decade.

SmackDown started with Kofi and Xavier Woods in the ring, and Kofi talked about his long-awaited return home to Ghana, West Africa. It was a touching experience for the WWE champion, but Ziggler was not waiting to be heard and he interrupted Kofi in the middle of his sentence before embarking on one of his recent moaning tirades.

Ziggler made it clear that he thought that Kofi's rise should have been him, and he repeated it last night. He also showed a video package of his career and everything he did at WWE, but he did not show him the respect and the opportunities that are needed. Kofi responded by saying that no one was saying that Ziggler had not had a good career and that he understood what Ziggler was feeling. However, Kofi separated the two when he showed Ziggler a video clip.

He showed when Ziggler dropped out of the US championship and left SmackDown Live about a year and a half ago. Kofi said he never give up on himself and the WWE universe as did Ziggler before declaring that he would not lose the WWE title to Ziggler's benefit at Super ShowDown. Dolph concluded by saying Friday at Super ShowDown that it would be him.

It was a stellar segment between the two that had more of a coincidental career than most realize. About a decade ago, Kingston and Ziggler were both young WWE superstars, who seemed destined for the future. Kofi won the intercontinental championship early in his career in 2008, but Ziggler won his first US championship against Kingston at the 2011 Capitol Punishment pay-per-view.

Their paths have crossed several times over the years, including Intercontinental and American league matches. Both men have been dubbed beasts of burden which are not the main material of the event. However, Ziggler had his career breakthrough earlier than Kingston, and after winning the Money in the Bank contract in 2012, Ziggler famously cashed in the night after WrestleMania 29 in 2013 to become the world's heavyweight champion.

Although he became world champion, Ziggler has never really been treated as a WWE main player. He would fail to win a world title again at the WWE despite a more brilliant job in recent years. Kofi, on the other hand, maintained his average level of cards and eventually became one of the most successful tag teams in WWE history, The New Day. However, earlier this year, Kofi's rise took off at SmackDown like never before and led to ultimate success.

Kofi won the WWE title for the first time in his career at WrestleMania 35 in the night's game against Daniel Bryan. He has been a tremendous WWE champion until now, but he will be challenged greatly by a motivated Ziggler at Super ShowDown. This match has happened countless times over the years, but this release really brings the career of both superstars closer.

You could argue, and you would probably be right, that Ziggler is not really in a much better position than it has been in recent years, but the fact that it is a challenge for the WWE title and has had time to win the world title picture in the past says the WWE trusts him. And then there is Kofi, who is simply the best of his career and a good clbad superstar who has stormed the WWE.

The two men who started as mid-card title superstars are at a level where they can be considered key players. It is the proof of the constancy of the individuals and their talent which, for a very long time, was not appreciated. Many would have been skeptical in 2009 if anyone had told them that Kingston vs. Ziggler in 2019 would be for the WWE Championship.

But that's why two superstars who have had similar races over the last decade and have battled themselves countless times, with the biggest match scheduled at Super ShowDown to silence this rivalry.
