Kolarov and Fazio score to bring Roma closer to their Champions League positions

Eusebio Di Francesco followed his 16th place in the Champions League, winning his first leg against Porto last week by consolidating his fifth place. It's only one point ahead of AC Milan in fourth place.

"We could not afford to fall behind today, we are happy with the three points and less of the performance," said Di Francesco.

Juventus have 13 points ahead of Napoli, second after Cristiano Ronaldo's 3-0 win over Frosinone on Friday.

Napoli lost points after a goalless draw against Turin, while Inter Milan was seven points behind in third after beating Sampdoria 2-1.

Atalanta and Lazio are three points behind the Romans after losing to AC Milan (3-1) and Genoa (2-1) respectively this weekend.

Roma could thank Swedish goalkeeper Robin Olsen for keeping him in the match against Bologna, threatened by relegation, while he denies the dangerous Roberto Soriano.

The star of teenage midfielder Nicolo Zaniolo – who scored a brace against Porto – is being debated with Stephan El Shaarawy after the break and ten minutes later, got the penalty kick that Kolarov converted to unlock the match.

It was the seventh goal of the season for Serbian Kolarov, more than any defender in the best leagues in Europe.

Captain Danile De Rossi also left the bench after 68 minutes of play, while Fazio managed to take the lead after a nice end in the 73rd minute.

Nicola Sansone scored a goal for Bologna six minutes from the end to ensure a nerve ending at the Stadio Olimpico.

"We did not come in the first period," said Di Francesco.

"I was expecting Zaniolo to cause more problems to (Mitchell) Dijks.

"I changed tactics after the break because we were stretched and Edin (Dzeko) was isolated.

"We did better in the second half in terms of reaching them and being better organized tactically.

"People often say that's the kind of three points that big sides get – sometimes you have to win that way, even if I do not like it.

"That said, during the second half, we made progress in all areas, I changed a few things and I had the reaction I wanted."

This match will be a lesson for us. We worked very hard against Porto and played well tactically. We were not that good tonight, but it was important to get the three points. "

"We had to win in the race for the top four," said Fazio. "Bologna played well but we stayed patient and got our reward."

Roma extended his unbeaten run to seven league games, while Bologna, who had beaten the capital's 2-0 team earlier in the campaign, remains within two points of the relegation zone.
