The management of Korle Bu University Hospital refuted allegations that a fire broke out in the maternity ward of the hospital on Tuesday evening (April 6, 2021).

A statement released by the hospital’s public relations manager, Mr. Mustapha Salifu in reaction to a social media report about the alleged fire with a video showing the the newborn evacuation said the video created a false alarm.

The person who filmed the baby evacuation incident had claimed that the Ghana National Fire Service had been called but staff still had to attend to help extinguish the flame.

But the Korle Bu PRO explained that the switch on an air conditioning system in the doctors’ restroom instead developed a slight problem and started to emit smoke, but the situation was quickly contained.

Below is a copy of the declaration

The maternity ward of Korle Bu University Hospital (KBTH) is not on fire as has been alleged on social media.

What happened was that an air conditioner switch in one of the doctors’ toilets started emitting smoke which was detected by service personnel around 9 p.m. yesterday. [Tuesday].

Service personnel quickly used fire extinguishers to put out the fire before the arrival of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).

As a precaution, some of the babies were transferred to another wing on the same floor.

We wish to declare that no patient or staff member suffered any loss or injury. Normal operations resumed after an assessment by the Ghana National Fire Service indicated that there was no longer a threat of danger to patients or staff.

We would like to congratulate the service staff for their vigilance and professionalism.
