The Health Facilities Regulatory Agency (HeFRA) gave the authorities of the Korle Bu University Hospital, the largest health facility in the country, the registration of the facility with the agency.
Hefra officials on a working visit to the hospital last Wednesday said that, even though the agency was committed to closing down health facilities that did not register, it would difficult to close Korle Bu, as this would lead to "Dead en mbade".

"We can not close this facility after the deadline because there will be mbad deaths if we do," said Hefra Acting Registrar Matthew Yaw Kyeremeh.
He therefore urged the authorities of Korle Bu to speed up the certification process in order to strengthen public confidence in the facilities and to serve as an example to other health institutions in the country.

HeFRA, which reports to the Ministry of Health, is the body mandated by the first part of the 2011 Law on Health Institutions and Institutions (Law No. 829) to register, authorize and regulate all health facilities. public and private sector in Ghana.

Responding to the ultimatum, the director general of Korle Bu University Hospital, Dr. Daniel Asare, said the hospital was getting a license from HeFRA.
He said his team had chosen the agency forms to start the required processes, but explained that his inability to speed up the process was partly due to the "huge data needed to fill out the forms".
"Korle Bu employs more than 5,000 people and has more than 17 professional groups. Each of these occupational groups requires different certifications. We need to gather all the data needed to fill out the forms.
"The Medical and Dental Council, for example, now publishes the Gazette in which will be published all the names of doctors in good standing," he said.
Dr. Asare, however, badured that the hospital would complete the registration process by the deadline, in accordance with his plan to obtain "all our local and international accreditations by the end of the year." ;year".

Of the four health centers visited, only the Akai House Clinic had registered and obtained a license from HeFRA.
LEKMA hospital officials also said they were in the process of obtaining a license from HeFRA.
Some officials at Gokals Opticals and Pets Products' Osu Branch told the team that although they knew about the law, their inability to register the facility could only be explained by officials at Gokals headquarters.
In response, Mr. Kyeremeh advised them to "convince your owners to make sure that this facility is licensed or risk being shut down during another visit".
