Kosovar Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj has summoned senior law and order officials for the alleged rape of a teenager – first by a teacher, then by the police, in a case that shocked the country.
Haradinaj has asked the authorities to take steps to prevent such events from happening again, his office said in a statement on Friday.
The teenager was allegedly raped two years ago, at the age of 16, by a teacher at her school in downtown Drenas. According to a report released Wednesday by the investigative site Insajderi, she reportedly went to report the badault to the police, but was repeatedly raped by an officer in charge of the investigation.
On Thursday, the police announced the arrest of a teacher, a police officer and a gynecologist accused of performing an illegal abortion on the girl.
Hashim Thaçi, the country's president, called the case "tragic and monstrous".
The Insajderi report provoked outrage from public opinion in Kosovo, where public mistrust of the police is strong. Hundreds of people demonstrated Friday in the capital Pristina and in front of the Drenas police station, demanding justice and the resignation of senior officers.
The protesters chanted "Shame" and waved banners on which was written "Danger, pedophile area".
A special session of parliament was convened Friday to discuss the case. A deputy, Fatmir Kollcaku, said that the girl "was a victim of those in whom she would have the most confidence".
The Kosovo mission of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe has also condemned the alleged crime.
