NEW YORK (AP / KOLO / WVLT) – US health authorities have stated that kratom overdose deaths are more common than previously reported.

According to the Associated Press, a government report released Thursday indicates that the herbal supplement has caused 91 overdose deaths in 27 states. Earlier, officials said they knew 44 dead throughout the country.

KOLO reported that most of the deceased also took heroin, fentanyl or other drugs, but that kratom was the only substance detected in seven of the deaths.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, researchers collected the data after examining death certificates and toxicology reports over an 18-month period.
