President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo inspected the ongoing work on the construction of Kumasi International Airport, which the contractor says is currently 77% complete and is expected to be completed in June 2022.

President Akufo-Addo visited the construction site on Friday, October 1, 2021, when he began his four-day working visit to the Ashanti region, as part of his annual working visits to all regions. from the country.

It will be recalled that on June 6, 2018, the President laid the foundations for the start of work on phase two of the Kumasi airport project and indicated that “the expansion of this airport is an essential element of the vision of the government to expand the frontiers of the aviation industry in the country, and fulfill the dream of making Ghana an aviation hub in West Africa.

During the inspection of the works on the site, the president learned that the terminal building was 88% complete, the road network 93% complete, the apron 89%, the air traffic control and rescue services and 53% firefighting.

The scope of work includes the extension of the existing roadway of the runway from 1,981 meters to 2,320 meters, the construction of a new taxi link and an apron, two new parking stands on the area. of traffic, aeronautical ground lighting systems, the design and construction of a terminal with the capacity to handle 800,000 passengers per year, an 11 MW substation, as well as the provision of new public services in bulk (electricity, water, wastewater treatment system, internet, etc.), independent of existing utilities for existing airport facilities.

The third phase of the project includes the construction of the air traffic control building, a fire station, as well as the expansion of the existing runway pavement. The construction of the fuel park must be financed by GOIL.

The project being built by MM. Contracta Construction UK Limited, the total amount of the project is 124.9 million euros, with funding from Santander, Deutsche Bank and UKEF.

President Akufo-Addo expressed satisfaction with the progress of the work undertaken so far and instructed the Ministry of Transport as well as the contractor to ensure that the deadline of October 2022 for completion is respected.
