Deputy Information Minister Pius Hadzide said that the appointment of Kwame Owusu as chairman of the Ghana Revenue Authority's (GRA) board of directors was based on the excellent record of his previous position at the Ghana Maritime Authority.
Speak on Eyewitness News On Tuesday, Hadzide called the president a good decision, adding that Owusu would undoubtedly outperform in his new position.
"If you look at the background of the gentleman in question, his background was impressive during his stay at the Ghana Maritime Authority. The facts speak for themselves. In 2016, this organization made losses, its revenues amounted to about 64 million GHc and its expenses to about 72 million GHc. When Mr. Owusu took office in 2017, they realized a turnover of 99 million GHc and spent about 66 million GHc approximately. The organization has been transformed into a for-profit organization, "he said.
President Nana Akufo-Addo has appointed, in a letter dated June 2019, Mr. Kwame Owusu, former Director General of the Maritime Authority of Ghana, Chairman of the Board of Administration of the Tax Administration from Ghana.
A letter from the president's office, quoted by citinewsroom.com, congratulates Mr. Owusu on his appointment and urges him to indicate his acceptance of the new role within 14 days.
Mr. Kwame Owusu resigned as Director General of the Ghana Maritime Authority in February 2019.
He resigned a few weeks after being accused of embezzlement in the company.
But government officials said the resignation was due to the fact that Mr. Owusu was 65 years old and was retiring.
He also reportedly oversaw dubious administration expenses, including spending one million cedis to renovate his official residence.
Mr Owusu was accused of having renovated his 2 bedroom residence in Cantonments at the cost of 1 million GHc.
He has also been accused of using more than 10,000 GHc to hold a luncheon meeting for 17 people at a hotel he owns.
The government subsequently opened an investigation into this matter. the report that has not been made public.
