KYMCO introduced its awesome SuperNEX electric motorcycle to the Tokyo Motorcycle Show, where it also unveiled Noodoe's new electric vehicle charging infrastructure. Electrek was on hand and met with the president of KYMCO to learn more about the electric superbike and the company's future plans.
KYMCO took us to the Tokyo Motorcycle Show to see the SuperNEX electric motorcycle at its first public show this year.
The SuperNEX is an electric sports car developed by Taiwan's largest scooter manufacturer, KYMCO.
The only electric motorbike has been on public display only one other time, during its unveiling in Milan last November.
In fact, Electrek was the first to publish the new electric motorcycle and its specifications directly from the Milan Motorcycle Show. And these are serious specifications, notice.
Motorcycle specs KYMCO SuperNEX
The SuperNEX reaches a top speed of 250 km / h (155 mph), making it one of the fastest electric motorcycles ever unveiled. Although the record holder of the fastest electric motorcycle in the world remains the Lightning LS-218 at 350 km / h.
But a bike is not limited to its maximum speed. The acceleration of the SuperNEX is equally impressive. The SuperNEX has a 0 to 100 km / h (62 mph) time of 2.9 seconds, a 0 to 200 km / h (124 mph) time of 7.5 seconds and – for the bravest – a 0- 250 km / h (155 mph) time of 10.9 seconds.
To help increase the already insane torque needed to reach these speeds, the SuperNEX sports a 6-speed manual transmission.
This manual transmission allows riders to take advantage of the engine's optimum power band. The gears help improve not only the efficiency and responsiveness, but also the acceleration and the maximum speed.
But this gearshift will not look like your old gas bike, because you will not need to grab a clutch handle. The SuperNEX allows for a clutchless shift, and a slipper clutch should help smooth the ride during normal downshifting.
The SuperNEX is not available yet, unfortunately. The company still uses this platform to test a number of battery solutions, which partly explains why it has not announced an exact badessment of battery performance and charging times. But KYMCO's president, Allen Ko, seems confident that the company will produce the bike, even if this point is "only in a few years", as he told Electrek.
But KYMCO is already preparing for that day. One of the biggest hurdles that society will face is the fact that KYMCO is not famous for the manufacture of electric motorcycles, nor even of normal size motorcycles. Despite making 550cc maxi-scooters, the SuperNEX is a brand new territory for the brand. And that means convincing people to buy one could be a difficult battle.
With features like SuperNEX, you thought the bike would sell itself. But runners are often very loyal to the brand and can be slow to accept KYMCO as a manufacturer of sports bikes. For this reason, Mr. Ko stated that the company was now considering starting the race. Although she had previously told Electrek of Milan that she was more interested in selling her bike retail, the company now sees the race as a way to prove what the bike can do.
According to Mr. Ko:
"In order for KYMCO to demonstrate the capabilities of SuperNEX, we need to impress runners and get them to understand SuperNEX's capabilities. That's why we now consider racing as an option for SuperNEX. "
Although it can not expand further on specific projects, there is a growing number of electric motorcycle racing leagues that could provide the track experience on KYMCO needed to show what the SuperNEX can do.
KYMCO Combines With Noodoe EV Charging
As part of the Tokyo SuperNEX unveiling, KYMCO President Allen Ko spoke to demonstrate how to load the SuperNEX with the new Noodoe Charging Station.
The Taiwanese company Noodoe shared the spotlight with KYMCO during the presentation of its new Noodoe EV operating system. Described as an advanced cloud operating system that orchestrates the operation of smart charging stations for electric vehicles, Noodoe hopes that its new electric vehicle charging infrastructure can help businesses meet the growing demand for public charging stations.
Noodoe presents its products to companies such as hotels and stores that want to offer charging services in their car parks. Noodoe would allow these companies to attract EV owners while simultaneously creating another revenue stream.
Noodoe EV charging stations running Noodoe EV OS are designed to provide customers with a simple charging experience and a range of advanced features for site owners to manage stations.
The customer does not need to be part of a subscription to use the billing service. Noodoe EV OS processes several types of payment transactions and supports universal payment at the pump. This means that drivers (or riders, for us, bikers) can use many payment methods such as credit cards, Apple Pay or Google Pay.
Integration of Noodoe with the Ionex electric scooter platform
As part of its partnership with KYMCO, Noodoe also intends to connect to existing KYMCO Ionex electric charging infrastructure.
KYMCO developed the Ionex line last year, which includes a range of electric scooters as well as charging infrastructure to support their exchangeable batteries.
The company then launched Ionex Commercial, which included B2B solutions to create a complete turnkey solution for fleet management of electric scooters. Designed for sharing services, delivery companies, messengers and other large scale electric scooter users, Ionex Commercial has paved the way for the adoption of higher levels of greener scooter fleets.
KYMCO estimates that electric scooters will continue to represent a growing segment of the large scooter market and could even become the majority of domestic scooter sales in the next 3 to 5 years.
While Noodoe already enters the US and other international markets and KYMCO's Ionex platform is about to do the same, we could see a lot more from both sides. Hopefully this will help us until the SuperNEX comes knocking on the door.
