Greg Vanney’s decision to become LA Galaxy head coach appears to be coming to an end, with Grant Wahl reporting that a deal is being finalized.
From the moment Vanney stepped down as coach of Toronto FC on December 1, he was linked to the vacant Galaxy position with Andrew Wiebe of MLSsoccer.com explaining why he would be a perfect fit for Los Angeles that day.
The 46-year-old was an LA Galaxy original during his playing career as a Best XI defender, competing from 1996 to 2002 and again in 2008, his final season.
Sources tell me LA Galaxy is in the process of finalizing a deal to make Greg Vanney their next head coach.

After serving as an assistant coach for Chivas USA in 2011, Vanney was named Toronto’s ninth head coach on August 31, 2014.
He led Toronto to a hat-trick in 2017, winning the MLS Cup, Fan Shield and the Canadian Championship. He holds all the coaching records in TFC history, including managed matches (250) and wins (112).
Guillermo Barros Schelotto was removed from his role as LA Galaxy coach at the end of October, with Dom Kinnear replacing on an interim basis for the remainder of the 2020 season. His last record with the club was 21W-26L-6D. Galaxy have had a total of nine permanent head coaches in their 25 seasons of history and only four since 2010: Bruce Arena (2008-2016), Curt Onalfo (2017), Sigi Schmid (2017-2018) and Barros Schelotto (2019-2020).
On a conference call with reporters following his resignation in Toronto, Vanney thanked the club, while clearly indicating his desire to coach again.
“I’m a builder, I love to build things,” Vanney said. “I like the projects. This club is in a very good location, there is not a lot of construction to do. This club is well placed.”
“I need to catch my breath and pull myself together a little bit, but anyone who knows me knows I don’t sit very well,” Vanney added. “It will not be long.”
Apparently not for long at all.
