Rangers confirmed the signing of Barrow goalie Andy Firth in the National League for an 18-month contract.
What is the story?
The 22-year-old has been a key figure in Barrow this season, making 18 appearances between the sticks according to Transfermarkt. However, it will be a big step forward for him to join the Scottish Premiership and a daunting task of forcing his way to the first team at the Ibrox account.

Gers director Steven Gerrard is already familiar with Firth, having previously worked with him when he was a youth coach at Anfield. Firth will also join Ryan Kent, Jordan Rossiter and Jon Flanagan, both Anfield graduates, at the Glasgow Club.
A useless distraction
Firth is likely to become the Rangers' fourth choice behind Allan McGregor, Wes Foderingham and Jak Alnwick. Although its acquisition may have been very affordable, it was probably also useless.
What's more, regularly returning to the ranks of Liverpool's former youth hopefuls testifies to a lack of ambition, imagination and inspiration on the part of Gerrard.
While the Gers are currently battling a tight title race, alongside Kilmarnock and reigning champion Celtic, Gerrard's priority in this January transfer slot should be to ensure that his team can maintain its challenge up campaign.
It is unlikely that Firth will add much to the Rangers team, and its acquisition could be considered an unnecessary distraction.
