LAFC has loaned Uruguayan striker Brian Rodríguez to Almería from the Spanish Second Division on loan. The loan begins immediately and lasts until the end of Almería’s season in May, although it can become permanent if certain performance thresholds are reached.

Diego Rossi, another Uruguayan LAFC playmaker and MLS top scorer in 2020, has reportedly drawn interest from Reading of England’s second league, but the transfer window closed on Monday without a deal being announced.

Rodríguez, 20, joined LAFC as a designated young player in August 2019 and has played 26 games, scoring twice and leading the team with seven assists last season when he placed second in MLS among the U22 players. He also made nine appearances for the Uruguayan national team.

However, Rodríguez has not started any of LAFC’s last five games in 2020 and has played just 12 minutes off the bench in three games in the CONCACAF Champions League. His departure leaves LAFC with an open designated player spot to fill, but if the team signs a replacement and Rodríguez returns from loan in May, that would leave him with four DPs, one above the league limit.

Designated players are those whose contracts only partially count towards the MLS salary cap.

Almería (14-5-3) is third in LaLiga2, even on points with Espanyol and three backs from league-leading Mallorca after 22 games. The top two teams will earn a promotion to the top La Liga, with the third placing in the four-team playoffs with another promotion spot on the line.

Almería last played in the top division in 2014-15.

LAFC is scheduled to open preseason training camp in Cal State Los Angeles on February 22. The MLS season kicks off the first weekend in April.
