A deceased couple during a dream vacation in Fuji sent a series of heartbreaking texts to his family before succumbing to a mysterious illness.
Michelle and David Paul of Texas died just two days apart after arriving on the small Pacific island on May 22nd.
Michelle, 35, sent several messages to her parents in Nevada informing them of their health as their troubling symptoms worsened.
The mother of a child reported feeling numbness in her hands and her husband was also struck by vomiting and diarrhea.
"We are both going to the doctor now," she said shortly after arriving in the country.
"We've been vomiting for eight hours, Dave has diarrhea, my hands are numb, we're going to text as soon as we can," she wrote.
Later in the day, she texted her mother to inform her of her condition.
"We have just returned from the clinic," she said. "They gave us fluids and anti-nausea drops, they gave us electrolyte packs and anti-nausea pills, we still do not feel 100%, we'll rest in our room," she said.
Michelle's mother, Juliet Calanog, replied, "Be careful … Drink a lot of liquid, bottled water, you have to rest."
The former university athlete Michelle died first.
David was to be evacuated to a hospital in Australia, but would have died before joining him in time, perhaps after contracting pneumonia.
A veteran of the Air Force, he was described as "very fit".
The couple had a two-year-old son named Ayden, while David also had a daughter – whose name and age were not reported – stemmed from an earlier relationship and that Michelle was helping to raise.
Michelle's father, Marc Calanog, said that the fact that no one seems to be able to say what was the cause of their deaths was "very difficult for me.
"My feeling is that … as parents, we are not supposed to bury our children," Calanog told Today News.
"It's very difficult for me, very difficult."
The couple's bodies can only be returned to their loved ones when the cause of their death is revealed.
If it's an infectious disease, they will have to be cremated.
The Fiji Ministry of Health said it was working with the police, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention to determine the cause.
