The Ashanti Regional Coordinating Board, in collaboration with Zoomlion Ghana Limited, launched the “Ashanti Sustainable Cleaning, Greening and Beautification Project” aimed at making Kumasi its past glory as a Garden City from West Africa.

The project is supported by the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies and the Security Council and is implemented in the 13 MMDAs of Greater Kumasi.

According to the Regional Coordinating Council, the project will run for a year in Kumasi before being extended to other districts in the region.

At the launch of the project in Kumasi today, Tuesday August 24, 2021, Regional Minister Simon Osei-Mensah said the goal of the project is to promote a clean and green environment and improve efficient public cleaning, waste collection in markets, park trucks and public places.

The scope of the program, Osei-Mensah said, includes planting trees, providing trash cans to viewpoints, distributing trash cans to households, and disposing of huge landfills.

Others, he said, are the painting of ceremonial curves and roundabouts, the collection of sands collected on the roadsides, extensive education on regulations by MMDAs for enforcement.

Mr. Mensah said the Ashanti Regional Security Council has become the primary agent responsible for enforcing sanitation regulations in MMDAs as the project is implemented.

He urged the MMDAs to liaise with the Security Councils to ensure the proper implementation of the project while a 13-member technical committee has been set up to oversee it.

Mr. Osei-Mensah indicated that MMDCEs will be evaluated on the basis of their performance in the project and those who fail to ensure smooth implementation and show lack of interest will be sanctioned.

Mr Mensah said that this project would not be allowed to resemble the “Project Keep Kumasi Clean and Green” which could not be successful due to the lack of interest shown by some of the MMDAs in the region who dropped the project.

He called on stakeholders and residents of the region to support the project to be successful.

For her part, the Managing Director of Zoomlion Ghana Limited, Ms. Gloria Anti, said the company will work closely with the Regional Coordinating Board to ensure that the project succeeds in making the region clean, green and beautiful.
