Laurent Koscielny sets Arsenal an ambitious goal for the rest of the season

Laurent Koscielny said that Arsenal could not afford to lose points if he wanted to secure football in the Champions League this season.

The Gunners are currently third with seven games to play of the season after their 2-0 win over Newcastle United on Monday night. However, the margins of error are really thin at the final stages of the break-in phase.

Unai Emery's men have a two-point lead over Tottenham and Manchester United, while Chelsea is in sixth place. Unlike the rest of the quartet, Arsenal does not have to play another so-called Big Six this season, but five of his last seven league games are out of the country, starting with his visit at Everton Sunday.

Winning this and the sense of momentum behind Arsenal will only grow before entering a tough quarterfinal of the Europa League against Napoli.

Koscielny said: "For many people, both legs against Napoli might seem to be the toughest matches because they make such a big team, but all of our remaining matches will be very difficult and we will have to be at our best if we want to win them all.

"It's our goal: we have to win every game until the end of the season, and if we do, we'll be sure to finish in the top four, which is very important for the club and the players.

Laurent Koscielny celebrates.

"The Europa League is also a competition we can win, we are not scared of anyone and we can beat everybody, we had to get a result this season.

"Against Chelsea or against Manchester United at home for example, we had to win to return in the race for the top 4. We have this mentality now.

"We are ready to fight until the end to get the best result of the season. We have a great unity in the team and a great confidence in the staff."

Arsenal has failed to qualify for the Champions League in each of the past two seasons, but it now seems to have two realistic paths to return to the competition of the best clubs in Europe.

However, their Europa League match against Napoli is far from over and the margins will be tight as the four teams compete for two places behind Manchester City and Liverpool.

"Every team's dream is to play football in the Champions League," said Ainsley Maitland-Niles. "It's the best European competition in the world.

"Playing against all the big teams would be fantastic and you will have the opportunity to put yourself to the test – that's all we wanted to do to win the match.

"We have taken one more step towards success."
