Parliamentary expert Dr Rasheed Draman called on the current leadership of Parliament to reach a consensus on which of the two main parties control the affairs of the 8th Parliament of the 4th Republic.
His comment comes after the second day of meetings of leaders of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and National Democratic Congress (NDC) caucuses and President Alban Bagbin ended without result.
Leaders are therefore expected to meet again on Thursday to reach consensus on the way forward.
Three issues are currently pending; which side constitutes the majority, which side should chair various committees and which caucus should sit on the right side of the Speaker.
According to NDC deputy whip Ibrahim Ahmed, MP Fomena Andrews Amoako Asiamah’s delay in formally writing to the president which side he chooses to do business has stalled the process.
But speaking on JoyNews’ Top Story on Wednesday, Dr Draman instructed Parliament’s leadership to reach consensus ahead of the first sitting of the 8th Legislature to avoid further embarrassment.
“I don’t think leaders have a choice. We were surprised on January 7th, because we didn’t see the embarrassment that we have experienced as a country coming. But we can predict what will happen on Friday, if this issue is not resolved.
“And so, in my very humble opinion, I think the two leaders with the President and whoever is involved in this discussion and this negotiation will have to work until they find a solution. They must try to save us from another embarrassment, ”he said.
Commenting on how the negotiations should go, Dr Draman suggested that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) be ready to compromise.
“At this point, it’s very clear that no party in Parliament is going to get everything they want. So it will require [a] give and take and this is where the negotiation has to take place, in terms of what the NDC can sacrifice and what the NPP can sacrifice in order for the country to move forward.
