SAN RAMON, California, April 30, 2019 / PRNewswire / – LeanMD, Inc., a slimming program with a mobile app, aims to take control of the current obesity epidemic – one person at a time. With nearly 40% of Americans considered obese and 71% overweight or obese, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the launch of Lean® in the wellness market has never been so important.

Obesity, defined by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) as having a body mbad index (BMI) of more than 30, is one of the leading causes of preventable chronic diseases. In fact, studies show a higher risk of diabetes, heart disease, depression, and osteoarthritis in obese people. More precisely:

  • If your BMI is greater than 35, your risk of developing diabetes is 93 times higher.
  • Overweight patients have a 32% higher risk of developing coronary heart disease, while obese patients have an 81% higher risk of developing coronary artery disease;
  • Obese patients have an increased risk of developing 55% depression; depressed patients have a 58% higher risk of becoming obese; and
  • Obese patients account for 33% of all joint replacement operations.

According to Dr. Mark Musco, co-founder, general manager and chief physician of Lean®, patients are still unaware of the health consequences of being overweight. "Being overweight is linked to reduced life expectancy, lower quality of life, harmful side effects, and so much more," said Dr. Musco. "We are trying to make it clear that obesity is not just about the swimsuit season and what you look like in the mirror, it's a health issue."

That's why Dr. Musco and his partner, the doctor of internal medicine and primary care physician, certified Mike Temkin, started LeanMD. Doctors have introduced Lean® into their California practices where they educated patients on how to lose weight without taking it back. Patients lost weight 4.5 times faster than other popular weight loss programs … and the news quickly spread.

"Today, we are so confident in our weight loss program that we want to provide physicians with the tools they need to be able to intervene and support their patients," said Dr. Temkin. "At Lean®, we work in partnership with healthcare systems who want to take a more responsible and active position in the face of the obesity epidemic – in fact, studies show that 69% of patients expect their doctor that they talk about their doctor. "

So, why consult a doctor to fight against weight loss? According to LeanMD:

  1. Medical providers have access to all the medical tools needed to optimize metabolism and help you achieve optimal health, including: hormone levels, thyroid function, etc.
  2. Doctors can prescribe medication to help patients safely manage hunger if necessary.
  3. Losing weight can be risky, especially if you have known (or unknown) health problems. By working with a health professional and monitoring your weight loss and vital signs, your weight loss can be achieved more safely.
  4. Having a doctor in your corner is essential. It gives you access to the latest research and lets your doctor choose the diet that's right for you.
  5. Working with a doctor means you can not guess. They can customize your care and meet your specific caloric needs.
